Sunrise on Folly Beach Pier

The current Folly Beach Pier was built in 1995 and extends 1,045 feet into the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It culminates in a 7,500 square-foot covered platform that affords an amazing view. It is home to fishing, walking, birding, and the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views. It has some of the best saltwater fishing in the area, and is 25-feet wide and 23-feet above sea level. The pier is the second longest on the east coast and offers not only spectacular views, but a variety of fishing tournaments, special events, and dining. The first pier was built in 1931, and burned down in 1957, was replaced with a surrounded 1,700 foot boardwalk. Sadly that pier burned again in 1977 and Folly Beach was left without a pier for 18 years. In May of 2019, the SC Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission announced the Pier will be replaced with a new structure. Once the design phase has been completed, construction will begin and the pier will be closed 18 to 22 months. The history of this pier goes back to featuring big-band giants Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo, and the scene of several beauty contests. The new pier hosted famous musicians during the 60’s and 70’s such as the Temptations, The Zodiacs, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Otis Redding.
